Once youve taken an animal into your home and made him or her part of your family, you have an obligation to protect and nurture that animal because youve made a commitment. But sometimes life throws a curveball and there are circumstances beyond our control. If youve found yourself in a situation that requires you to find new homes for your companion animals, youll need to take every precaution to ensure they are going to a forever loving home. You Have to Rehome Your Pet. Whats Next? If youre in truly desperate straits and dont have the time or ability to vet the background of strangers offering to take your companion animals, your best move is to contact local rescues for assistance. Many are networked nationwide and work incredibly hard to secure safe alternatives for pets. If rescues cant offer immediate assistance, as much as it may pain you to do so, take your pet to a shelter. At least there, your dog or cat may be given a chance to find a good home. Having to surrender your companion animal to a shelter is not the best outcome, but its a far better fate than having your companion fall into the wrong hands.   Always Charge a Rehoming Fee Criminals easily prey on people who just want their animals to go to a good home. They know that sometimes youre pressed for time and have no choice but to surrender an animal in your hour of need. They rely on that raw emotion and will do their best to convince you theyll be good guardians. Of course, you very much want to believe them and that works in their favor. First and foremost, when giving a pet away, always charge a rehoming fee. People looking for animals to abuse usually wont pay a fee. Youre likely to hear a sob story from someone who wants your animal but says they simply cant afford to pay an adoption fee. That should be a red flag. Having a pet costs money. Food, vet checkups, and vaccines arent free. If they cant afford to pay a $50 adoption fee, what are they going to do when a bigger expense comes up? Charging an adoption fee also prevents some people from adopting your animals on a whim, and then, when they lose interest, turning them in at a shelter or abandoning them on a dark, lonely street far from home. Sick and amoral people cannot always be spotted on looks alone. Some individuals want your dogs and cats just to  abuse, torture, and kill them. By charging an adoption fee, you make it much more difficult for animal abusers to acquire animals—specifically, your animals. Dogfighting In dogfighting, dogs are trained to be vicious and trained to attack other animals, so-called bait animals. According to the Michigan State University Animal Legal and Historical Center, one of the methods used to train fighting dogs is to dangle bait animals, such as a small dog, cat, rabbit, or guinea pig on a rope in front of a dog thats forced to run on a treadmill or around a circle. Naturally, these small animals are terrified. The dog is eventually given the animal to kill at the end of the session as a reward. Where do these animals come from? Some people steal animals right off the street or from a backyard. Other people use much more cunning means to obtain bait animals. For example, at a Florida shelter, an elderly woman and her clean-cut young son came to adopt a small animal. Ostensibly, the animal was to be â€Å"a companion† for the elderly woman. The pair went home with a small white mixed breed who was immediately thrown into a ring with a fighting dog and killed. Looks can be deceiving. The bottom line is that people searching for bait dogs will use any disguise, tell any lies, and use charm or downright deception to separate you from your loving companion. Again, charging an adoption fee makes it more difficult for someone to acquire animals for dogfighting. Class B Dealers Although there are breeding facilities to supply the animal-testing industry with dogs and cats, some laboratories attempt to cut corners by hiring dishonest intermediaries who deal in stolen pets. Such dealers are referred to as Class B dealers, and are classified as random source animal dealers regulated by the  USDA  to sell animals to laboratories for experimentation. Class B dealers sometimes acquire animals in unscrupulous ways. Charging a small adoption fee will make your animal unprofitable to them so theyll likely look elsewhere. Finding a New Home While its strongly recommended that you affix an adoption fee, you can always waive the fee if you find someone you truly trust. Whether or not you charge an adoption fee, there are steps you can take to make sure your animals are going to a good home: Perform a home visit: Visit the potential adopters home and speak with the other family members. Are there other pets in the home? Who will care for the animals? Does anyone have allergies? Where will the animals live? If there are children, make sure that the adults know that they should be responsible for the animals; not the children.Ask someone to perform a home visit if you cant: Thanks to Facebook and Petfinder, the perfect guardian for your companion animal may be miles away, even in another state. If the potential adopter doesn’t live near you, ask a rescue in the town where they live to visit the home. Rescuers who had given Appolonia cats became suspicious when he requested additional cats. In 1998,  Class B dealer Barbara Ruggiero  and two accomplices were found guilty of felony grand theft of dogs in Los Angeles, California. At nights the bulbs of the sky-scrapers illuminate the sky-line like lights on a Christmas tree. Be it 3 a. m. in the morning or 12 at noon, the city is always in motion. The highways are stained with the yellows of taxis and the streets are aligned with girls in mini-skirts taking selfies and guys with baggy pants riding their skateboards. In the interiors of the air-conditioned rooms on the seventeenth story are men in black coats typing away furiously in their laptops. In the one-bedroom apartment a teenager is writing in her diary while her brother watches television just two feet away from her. A college freshman is sitting atop her fire escape †propped on her lab lies open a history textbook with twentieth century pictures of the Chrysler Building. A father makes his way home from a laborious day of construction †his hand gripping the steel pole of the train as it picks up speed. New York is a city where you cant quite tell time. It moves so fast that 60 minutes seems to be 60 seconds, and a month seems less than a week. Thats how I felt when I lived in New York. Each day had a repetitive schedule, but it was so tightly bundled up that I barely had time to sign about disappointments. I would wake up at 8:30 a. m. to catch the 7 train to Thompson Street and then eat my granola bar in the elevator on the way to the 7th floor where my classes were. However, the loads of work (along with the engagement of the classes) kept me from drifting off to sleep. Before I knew it, it would be 3:15 and Mr. Mills would tell us to finish our creative writing assignment for homework. But it was after school that the real fun began. The freedom I had during freshman year was unlike the freedom I had had all my life. I was allowed to come home as late as 6 p. m. and my mother would never question where I was. Be it after school activities or other things  , she didnt really care as long as I kept up with my schoolwork. And so there was barely a day when I headed home at 3:15, for instead I took the time to explore the breathtaking city. So each Friday, me and my two best friends, Jannat and Nishat, would walk to Gantry Park. It wasnt very close to my school, since it was about a 40 minute walk. We had the option of taking the subway, but it just seemed cooler   to walk there. There was just something about lower Long Island City that would grab our attention every week. One week, however, we decided to go somewhere wed never dare approached. We made a left turn on 22nd Street and approached 5 Pointz, a place eminent for it bleak sidewalks and lurking drunkards. There was a building on which the paint was chipped off in random places and cobwebs hung from the windowsill of the first floor. The front door was always closed, and its doorknob was so weathered that it didnt seem like anyone had touched it in years. It stunned me as to just how far peoples imaginations could lead them †especially the artists of these works, who were probably just poverty-stricken wanderers of the city. The building wasnt demolished, but rather, it was a representation of expressions. It was the gateway to inside the hearts of many New Yorkers. Everyone, once in a while, feels like a mummy struggling to get a grasp of the life that is ticking away with the passing of every moment.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  High school is an ever-changing process. As I think back to my last three years of High School things like clothes, language, and even hairstyles have transformed. If in three years so much can change imagine, how much things have changed since our parents were in school. From â€Å"bell-bottoms† to â€Å"baggy jeansâ€Å", from â€Å"groovy† to â€Å"slamminâ€Å", and from the infamous â€Å"pompadour† to the now popular â€Å"buzz cutâ€Å". If these things are so different, I wonder how much other things have changed?   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  One of the biggest changes, since my parents were in high school, is the way birth control, sex educations, and sexual activity are looked at. When my mom was in high school a girl could not just go to a doctor and ask for the pill, she had to have parental consent. Nowadays anyone at any time can get some form of birth control whether it be condoms, birth control pills, etc. Sex education in my moms’ day was mainly used to tell kids about the fundamentals of sex. They did not expect the kids they were teaching it to were going to go out and have sex. Today it is taught to educate teens of the risks and repercussions of sex. Then there’s sex itself, in my moms day sex was not accepted like it is today. If you were a sexually active person you didn't tell anyone, especially if you were a girl. Because of television today and other forms of media sex is all over the place, therefore being pumped in to kids heads as acceptable.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Marijuana is another big topic when it comes to the changes over the last 35 years. When my mother was in high school people that smoked marijuana were not considered â€Å"cool† by the non-smokers. They were considered the outcasts and didn't associate much with the people who didn't use it. Presently, in high school, marijuana is more socially accepted and someone would not be cast out by his or her peers. I think it has a lot to do with the glamorization of it in the media today. Actors, musicians, and even comedians all talk about it like it’s fun and exciting to do. With this constant glorifying of marijuana in all these aspects it just becomes part of a teenagers everyday life. From Rock & Roll to Hip-Hop, Music has and will continue to be the biggest influence in teenage life.
